Through
a grant funded by the AIDS Foundation of Chicago and the Ravenswood Healthcare
Foundation in conjunction with Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, RDR
produced a 4 part program designed exclusively for the deaf community entitled
"Ignore AIDS? Can't!" This unique
program,
shot without sound, employed deaf actors who performed the entire program
in American Sign Language. It was subtitled in English for the hearing community.
A sample of this project can be viewed in our video
samples page.
It tells a story, introduced by two deaf
hosts,
of a young couple who decide to get tested for AIDS before taking their relationship
more seriously. The girlfriend, Joy, is black to reflect national statistics
that show an alarming number of black women contracting the disease. The couple
receives counseling about the disease and how it is spread and they learn
after
testing
that he is HIV negative and she is positive. Later, Joy visits her doctor
to learn about the medicaltreatments and medications she will need to endure
and in the last segment, now six months later, we get an update from Joy,
her boyfriend, and a personal friend about what living with AIDS has meant
to all of them. We also hear professionally from her doctor and her counselor
as to her medical and emotional condition.
The program has been warmly received by the deaf community and has received nationwide coverage for its unique approach to a difficult subject.
